Handling anxiety at work
I'm fortunate to have a job I love now, but this hasn't always been the case. Sadly the repercussions of having a stressful job on someone who suffers from anxiety or depression are hard, and most time a lousy work environment can make it way worse.
Anxiety is a typical body response to stress, is a feeling of nervousness, unease, or worry that typically occurs in the absence of an imminent threat, it's not the same as fear. Coping with these circumstances can be difficult, I had to deal with these in my last job to the point that the best decision I could have made was to quit. So here are some tips that had helped me manage my situation and I hope it could help you:
1. Know your symptoms and triggers
One thing that gets my anxiety over the top is a lack of organization and strategy, setting clear goals for myself was a right way I could cope. My anxiety skyrocketed when I realized that the environment I was in was everything I dread: unorganized, unsupportive, filled with unhealthy competitiveness. I recognized that the whole ordeal was getting out of hand. I couldn't handle the lack of transparency and made my imposter syndrome even worse. So after a few months of not being able to deal with my situation and feeling the creeping of depression settling in, I quit.
2. Get help
As you guys already know, I'm a massive advocate for therapy, and basically, the way I've been able to handle my anxiety is by having regular sessions with my therapist. I'm very open and forthcoming when it comes to my struggles now because it took me a while to understand that was okay to get help, that I didn't have to have everything figured out or be everything for everyone all the time. A good support system at work is also necessary but not possible in every job. However, it's essential to have someone that can help you navigate the days that feel that a road to recovery is nearly impossible. If you can't have someone you can trust, group therapy, friends and family will make you feel like you're not alone.
3. Take time for yourself
If you're having a flare up it's good to practice some self-care, in fact, it’s actually a critical factor in your professional success that you take time for yourself. It's always good to request a few days off and do whatever helps you cope with your symptoms and re-group, it won't harm your office reputation, but a potential meltdown will.
4. Strategize around it
Get on top of your triggers, if you're like me and having a clusterfuck of a day messes you up, set clear goals for and make sure you're not overdoing it; to-do lists always help to keep your mind and your symptoms at bay.
5. Self-Care beyond Sundays
Little acts of self-care during the day, like drinking tea, having flowers on your desk, take a walk outside. Remember you will get through this, and you'll become a better and more successful employee because you're strong enough, and you don't have to do it alone.
